1 Unremarkable

Unremarkable is a short film, at 12 minuets long, on the website, short of the week. It involves a very distressed woman in her car getting out and falling down dead. This compelling short film then takes the audience on a journey into finding out what happened to her and how she died and the aftermath of her death. It was written and directed by Jared Anderson and has been nominated for an American Cinematographers Award. It was produced by American Film Institute and made in the USA.

The Genre for this film is drama with sub-genres of crime and live-action. This Connotes that the film will be dark and slightly mysterious, we also know that there will be crime in the 12 minuets of this film. I would also expect the key camera work that would be stereotypical for a film in this genre. This could be things like Low and high angles to show the venerability of the victim or the power of the criminal in a particular scene. Or the use of close ups and shot reverse shots in very tense scenes. All of these would be used in a film that has crime as a sub-genre, which is why for our film will be using them when we create our film that has a sub-genre of crime. As well as crime, it also has a very mysterious feel to it because the audience does not know what has happened to the lady at the start of this short film and the ‘not knowing’ is a very good way to draw the audience in and get them to watch until the end of the film. I think that we should use this key element in our own work.

The Narrative is again, very balanced between the audience not knowing the cause of something and the crime which took place and how it did as well as the aftermath of her death and what happened to her husband and children after she died. This film also creates enigmas, which are questions that the audience ask to themselves. I think that it is a really good way to do a film because it entices the audience to watch the film to see what happened. The Soundtrack to this film is very quiet which adds to the tense feeling of the film. This also connotes to the clear genre of the short film being crime and live action/ mystery.

The target of this short film is not specified on the description of the film, however from the clear conventions of the genre shown i would say that it is males aged 25-30 because they wouldbe able to relate to the situation of having chilldren and a wife. This is also the clear choice for the target audience because, stereotypically, Men are seen to be more intereated in crime and mystery genres.

2. Black Swell

Black swell is a short drama and runs for 9 minutes. It was directed by Jake Honig and written by David Rysdahl. I found this film on Short of the week and it involves a story of a univercity professor going to a motel and planning to commit suicide. He is about to do it when heavy music from the room next door interupts him. He then goes to investicate and realises it is an old student. He invits himself into the old mans room and starts talking to him. In the end the old man shouts at him and tells him to go away. He does and the music starts again, louder. Then a bang from the next room ends the film. It turns out the young man commits suicide instead. The genre of drama/ live action connotes that this film is dark and atmospheric.

For this narrative, the director had to create the suspence and atmosphere with camera angles and music. To do this he use long takes of the men talking and it building up toward the conversation they have. But before this, the director must introduce a the main charcter in  the film. In this example, the man is shown to us but we are unsure of who he is or what he does. This creates and enigma for the audience making them want to watch on. I would like to do something similar in my film. I want the audince to want to watch for what happens next. Another enigma would be, Why is he wanting to commit suicide? What has driven him to this? and so on.

The lack of non-dijetic music fits into the live action/ drama genre because it creates a suspence feel tht leaves the audience watching to find out more. This technique will also be used in our film because it is of similar genre aswell as the use of similar camera angles and movement. Low angle shots would show vunrability where as high angled shots show power, futhermore high angled shots that are angled differently could also show venerability. It is all about perspective.

The target audience for this film is not specified. However, from all of the conventions shown in the film, I would say that the target audience is around 18-26 years male. This is because the genre is stereotypically associated with the male gender and the age range is more likely to relate with the younger man in this. This portrayal of both young and old men leads me to believe that the secoundry target audience would be males aged 50-60 becuase of the relation to the older man and what he is/has gone through.

Over

This film is directed by Jorn Threlfall and is an experimental live action film on humanity. It uses long takes of one street in the uk and shows, in reverse order, the clean up of a crime/ sucide. This is very well done becasue of the lack of non-dijetic music and the use of dijectic sound effects like car alarms and doors closing. The narrative crates alot of enigmas, including; who died? How? when? and so on. Creating enigmas in this genre is very easy and is one of the main conventions of a sub-genre crime film. The genre can also connote that the short film will end with a twist that shocks the audience and creates several new enigmas for the audience that do not get resolved.

The camera angles in this film are very simple and do not really change from a long shot, long take. This is where some people may say that this short film is experimental because of the lack of range of camera angles and camera shot types. I personally like this type of filming and directing in crime films because it makes the audience look at things they would not normally look at in a scene. The mise en scene in this film follows the typically codes and conventions in a crime and live action film.

The target audience in this short film would be males aged 20 - 25 because they are the typical target audience for films of this genre and style. However, the secoundary target audience would be females aged 25-30 becasuse they would have the patinece and curiosity to watch the whole film to the end and question the enigmas that the film creates.

In my film i dont think this style is right for what we want to achieve but it was refreshing to look at somethingdifferent and new to other things i have looked at.
